The Tobacco Issue

My backround
Hi, thanks for coming to my website. I am a freshman at
ACGC High School in Minnesota. In Minnesota we have
something called Grad Standards. And basically what they
are is tasks that we have to complete before we can
graduate high school. Thanks again for coming.Enjoy!
Tobacco: Harmless habit or Poison
When I was searching the internet for things concerning
tobacco I came across internal documents that were
supoenaed by the courts in the lawsuits against the
companies. It is amazing what they have kept hidden from
the consumers. In the documents it says that when they
polled sales of children the sales hadecreased, and that
they were upset and that they had to find a way to boost
sales for children. In a 1958 report in a visit to the U.S.
and Canada it says that tobacco is, "believed that smoking
causes lung cancer if by 'causation' we mean any chain of
events which leads finally to lung cancer and which
involves smoking as an indispensable link. I also found
numerous other examples of deception by the tobacco
companies. It is sickening to know that people are dying
because of an addiction that they think is just a
choice. Here are some scary facts about tobacco:1)
Smoking causes many kinds of cancers, heart disease,
and respiratory illnesses which are mostly fatal.2) Long
term smoking gives you a 50% chance of dying earlier than
others.3) Nicotine is the main ingredient in tobacco and
without nicotine and its adictiveness the tobacco
companies would be out of business.4) Nicotine is
addictive in two ways, both psychologically and
physiologically, similar to heroin and cocaine addictions.5)
Teenagers (13-18) and children (6) Low tar cigarettes are
being pushed to give false health reassurance.7) Passive
smoking is a public hazard which causes, asthma,
bronchitits, glue-ear, lung cancer, and heart disease.8)
Over 4,000 Americans die from smoking every year.9) 25%
of 17-18 year old American teens smoke.10) In the U.K.
smoking kills over six times as many people as: car
accidents, manslaughter, suicide, illegal drugs, and AIDS
combined.11) Of those Americans who smoke, at least
70% of them would like to quit, but only 2.5% mangage to
stop.12) The U.K. office of Population, Censuses and
Surveys defines a smokers as a person who smokes one
or more cigarettes a week.13) 1 in 6 deaths a year is
related to smoking.
Whether or not you believe that tobacco is a drug and that
it kills, it is a fact. Should what the tobacco companies
themselves think is a drug be left on the market, for
children to buy. The tobacco companies are in an
essence making money off of a persons addiction. For
